Vienna
This weekend we visited Vienna, a city that the most recent issue of the “Economist” ranked as #2 in terms of livability. While I no doubt agree that Vienna is filled with opportunities for cultural enrichment, has clean streets except for the occasional dog excrement and is designed with spacious green, public spaces, our trip to Vienna was more of an education in the art of sachertorte, Vienna’s famous desert. In between visiting St. Stephan’s Cathedral, the Belvedere and Hofburg (two of the city’s palaces), the Museum Quarter and walking on the Ringstrasse, we managed to taste sachertorte in a few venues. Alas, our final destination–Cafe Sacher Wien in whose kitchen the sachertorte originated–served the finest version of the delicacy with its rich chocolate icing and subtle apricot filling.
