“The Motherf**ker with the Hat”

It was my first time visiting the Southbank in a long while – I walked from St. Paul’s Cathedral across the bridge and along the Thames to the NT where I met a girlfriend to see “The Motherf**ker with the Hat”, a dark comedy that takes place in NYC during the late ’80s. I hadn’t expected to see so much development and change along the river: hotels, more restaurants and plenty of finished public spaces for people to enjoy the views of the City and Westminster. It was a delight, watching tourists and locals alike enjoy the urban beauty London has to offer on a summer day.

What I enjoyed most about “The Motherf**ker with the Hat” was the late ’80s vibe (apartment decor, music, fashion sense) and the one comedic character of the five, the closeted Puerto Rican cousin of the recently-released-from-jail, AA-attending main character. But the show’s themes were pretty heavy for my first theatre outing in a long while (hypocrisy, addiction, social mores). All in all, great acting on the part of the cast members (not to mention excellent dialogue) but we walked away feeling a bit stunned by the play’s dark conclusion.
